TB Program

The overall objective of the TB control program is to reduce mortality, morbidity and social economic burden associated with TB in the Zambian population. During the proposal development, the TB control program adopted the five elements of the Stop TB strategy as its objectives. These

objectives, as they appear in the Stop TB Strategy are:-

1.Pursuing quality DOTS expansion and enhancement through’ 5 components of DOTS strategy. Below are the five components which make up the DOTS strategy
a)Sustained political commitment to increase human and financial resources and make TB control a nationwide priority integral to the national health system;
b)Access to quality-assured TB sputum microscopy for case detection among persons presenting with, or found through screening to have, symptoms of TB (most importantly, prolonged cough);
c)Standardized short-course chemotherapy for all cases of TB under proper case management conditions, including direct observation of treatment;
d)Uninterrupted supply of quality-assured drugs;
e)Recording and reporting system enabling outcome assessment of all patients and assessment of overall programme performance
2.Addressing TB/HIV, MDR-TB and other special challenges.
3.Engaging all care providers.
4.Engaging people with TB and affected communities.
5.Enabling and promoting research.
