Tuberclosis Programme
Objective
To improve the quality of TB care, thereby, reducing the number of deaths related to Tuberculosis and increasing the cure rates through the new TB treatment strategy.
Specific objectives
• To decrease the burden of TB and HIV/AIDS by strengthening the role of Church Health Institutions and Community Treatment Supporters (CTS) in the management of 10,000 TB/HIV co-infected patients and PLWA by 2010, by:
- Increasing the uptake and adherence to Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART) and TB treatment:
- Increasing community support for PLWHA, particularly those receiving ART and TB treatment:
- Increasing community and health facility capacity to support quality ART and TB at community level:
- Strengthening the management of TB in all provinces and districts by 2011 in order to achieve the Global targets for TB control (detection of 70% of smear positive cases and cure rates of 85% of the detected smear positive cases) and prevent the development of Multi Drug Resistance (MDR) TB.
- Developing and implementing TB and HIV coordinated activities in order to reduce the burden of both diseases in co-infected individuals
- Supporting and strengthening the health system for effective TB control and management with a focus on infrastructure strengthening, efficient supply chain management for drugs/laboratory and supplies and human resource capacity.
- Developing and implementing a health implementation strategy for TB
- Strengthening the capacity for operational research within the TB programme
Achievements of the TB programme
- 100 church health facilities and 10 community based programmes have been strengthened to implement Direct Observed Therapy Short course (DOTs)
