Victims of Human Rights Violations given assistance.
152 Human rights violation victims (59 male and 93 female) were given support to claim their rights. This included advise on the courses of legal action at their disposal, transport to Police stations, arbitration, referral to organisations that offer legal aid and following up cases to guard against corruption, intimidation and ensure compliance to rulings.
35 LCCB field staff refreshed in Human Rights Gender and Advocacy.
20 field staff refreshed in HRG. Some CHIs resolved to use the allocation for this activity to reach more community members. CHIs had conducted HRG refresher meetings earlier in the year.
300 community and opinion leaders sensitised in Human Rights and Gender.
2, 551 community and opinion leaders (1,148 males and 1403 females) were trained in Human Rights Gender and advocacy. This training has increased social support for victims of violations and acted as a deterrent against perpetration of HRG violations. CPTs have prevented property grabbing after funerals by educating family members gathered at the funeral on what the law requires in testate and interstate circumstances.
300 PLWHA, widows/widowers and OVC sensitised in HRG and advocacy.
1,417 vulnerable people (306 males and 1,111 females) were sensitised in HRG and advocacy. This intervention is essential to overcoming and preventing HRG violations because people are empowered with knowledge on their rights.
5000 people reached through World AIDS Day commemoration activities.
About 15,496 people were reached through World AIDS Day commemorative events.
The 2007 World AIDS Day Theme was: Leaders -Stop HIV; Keep the promise. This theme had a focus on the need for leadership in the fight against HIV. Leaders were challenged to lead by example through testing and exemplary behaviour.
This day was marked by drama, quiz, sports, focus groups discussions, prayers, debates, marches and other activities which served to increase people’s awareness of the magnitude of HIV in their communities. Many communities which are far from central meetings places were able to organise their own activities.
15 meetings between Duty Bearers and Claim holders held.
35 meetings between duty bearers and claim holders were held. These meetings attracted 1,566 people (512 males and 1,054 females).
Chikankata has continued to make great strides in HRG. The CHI managed to facilitate the incarceration of a man who had defiled his daughter, after he had bribed the police to change the charges to a civil offence. The man was later released on bail and started threatening the girl and her mother. The project intervened by facilitating the reporting of this misconduct to the Police. The man’s bail has since been revoked. The case awaits the courts decision.
